welcome

Welcome to the Uniform Project Rochester blog! I’m really happy you’ve made it here. I hope that over the coming month, this blog will become a medium for awareness and change.

Before we get started on this project, I’ll share a bit about myself. My name is Janna and I am a high school senior from Rochester, NY. (No, the weather really isn’t that bad up here.) I love classical music, reading, languages, and exploring on my bike. Quirky things: I have a crazy sense of smell; handwriting is my craft; and I like old photography and vintage things. (Those aren’t too quirky, I know.) But this project isn’t about me – it’s for a much greater cause.

In its own words, the “Uniform Project was born in May 2009, when one girl pledged to wear a Little Black Dress for 365 days as an exercise in sustainable fashion. Designed to also be a fundraiser for the education of underprivileged children in India, the project acquired millions of visitors worldwide and raised over $100,000 for the cause.”

Taking a page from UP’s book, I’m going to wear the same dress for one month (washing it, of course) as a fundraiser for women’s education in rural Africa. I will assume my own “uniform” of a black dress, symbolically representing the uniform a girl would need to attend school. Funds raised through the project will be donated to Camfed.org, an organization committed to providing education for girls in Africa. (Please check out my fundraising page and consider making a charitable donation – even a small donation can really make a difference!)

Day 1 starts tomorrow… Let’s help empower these women through education. Let’s change the world.
